Use of the afsrc Parameter
This policy applies to all Affiliates whose promotional method involves software that interacts with the shopper during checkout — including browser extensions, toolbars, downloadable apps, and cashback or coupon tools ("Software-Based Affiliates"). It supplements the AvantLink Terms of Use.
Purpose: To ensure Software-Based Affiliates recognize a prior affiliate referral and don't interfere with it.
Detection
The current supported indicator of a prior referral is:
- URL Parameter: afsrc=1 present in the landing page URL's query string.
Required Actions Upon Detection
When afsrc=1 is present*, Software-Based Affiliate technology must:
- Suppress prompts — no pop-ups, banners, or notifications encouraging the shopper to activate a competing offer
- Not override tracking — no new tracking links, cookies, or redirects
- Not require a click to intervene — no mechanism designed to reclaim the sale
- Leave the checkout path alone — no injected discount codes or cart changes
*This applies only to the initial browser tab. stand-down not required on subsequently opened browser tabs.
Duration
The stand-down period lasts for the shopper's browser session, or 30 minutes, whichever is longer.
Installation & Consent
- Software must be installed only with the end user's affirmative consent.
- Tracking or rewards must require a user-initiated click — no automatic activation.
- Software must be easy to uninstall.
Disclosure
Software-Based Affiliates must post Additional Terms that clearly describe what triggers tracking and rewards.
Compliance and Enforcement
Toolbar/extension-type Affiliates may only run on a Merchant program that has approved this affiliate type.
Violations are treated as a breach of the Affiliate Agreement. AvantLink may:
- Terminate from brand programs
- Void or withhold commissions
- Suspend or terminate the Affiliate account
This policy is incorporated into, and should be read alongside, the AvantLink Terms of Use.
